We were pleasantly surprised to see the northern lights show up at Seal River Heritage Lodge around midnight on our latest Birds, Bears and Belugas safari, and even more surprised to see the moon at the same time. It’s rare to see the moon, the stars and the northern lights at the same time.

The window in which we can view the northern lights is extremely short at this time of year, as there is only about one hour of true darkness in early August. After the sun sets, it soon starts to rise again. Everyone enjoyed being under the dancing lights and watching a dazzling show, a truly special and unique experience after some incredible days of beluga whale and polar bear watching.

As the nights get longer, the northern lights will become more prominent and visible for longer periods of time, which will be one of the highlights of the fall season, as they were on last fall’s Arctic Safari!
