It’s pure winter magic. And we’ve got your front-row seat.

Partnered with Local Pros

For 2026, we’re working with trusted local operators in Churchill to offer guided northern lights excursions and winter experiences. From night-time aurora photography tours to daytime adventures like dog sledding, cultural outings, and snowshoe treks, there’s a full winter menu of experiences waiting.

Your job? Pick your dates, book your room, and show up. We’ll help connect you with the right people to make your adventure unforgettable.

Why Churchill is a Top Aurora Destination

So what makes Churchill so special when it comes to the northern lights?

Location, location, location. Churchill sits directly beneath the auroral oval – a donut-shaped ring around the geomagnetic poles where aurora activity is the most frequent and intense. Unlike many other destinations that rely on occasional bursts of geomagnetic activity, Churchill is perfectly positioned for consistent displays, often boasting up to 300 nights of aurora each year.

The town’s northern latitude and low light pollution make it an exceptional place to witness the lights with your own eyes – and camera. In the dead of winter, the air is dry and skies are clear, increasing your odds of seeing those ethereal green waves, and sometimes even pinks and purples, ripple across the sky.

But it’s not just the science that makes Churchill magical. There’s something about standing under the vast Arctic sky, surrounded by snow and silence, that makes the experience feel spiritual. It’s not just sightseeing – it’s stargazing for the soul.

Winter in Churchill: What to Expect

From mid-January to March, the skies are dark, crisp, and crystal clear –  ideal for catching the show. Temperatures dip well below freezing, but that’s part of the thrill. Bundle up, step outside, and feel the rush of being somewhere wild and wonderful.

Packing Tips: What to Bring for Your Winter Aurora Adventure

Cold weather is part of the experience in Churchill, but with the right gear, you’ll be comfortable and ready for adventure. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Base Layers: Moisture-wicking thermal underwear (top and bottom) is a must.
  • Insulating Layers: Fleece, wool, or down mid-layers keep you warm without bulk.
  • Outerwear: A high-quality parka rated for Arctic temps and windproof snow pants are essential.
  • Footwear: Insulated winter boots with good traction will keep your feet warm and dry.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget a toque (beanie), balaclava or neck warmer, and waterproof mittens or gloves (bring hand warmers, too!).
  • Camera Gear: If you’re a photographer, bring a sturdy tripod, wide-angle lens, extra batteries (they drain quickly in the cold), and a remote shutter release.

If you need help figuring out what to pack, our team is happy to offer personalized recommendations, and Churchill’s outfitters often have gear available for rent.
