About The Americas

The Americas is a 10-part nature documentary five years in the making, focusing on the incredible biodiversity found throughout North and South America. Produced by BAFTA-winning wildlife producer Mike Gunton (Life, Planet Earth II, Dynasties) in collaboration with BBC Studios Natural History Unit and Universal Television Alternative Studio, the series covers the entire 8,700-mile stretch from the Arctic to Antarctica.

“I had this idea for many years that there was one place on the planet that, for some reason, no one had ever really done a full job on, which is the whole of the Americas,” said executive producer Gunton. “It’s all about the scale of the place. There is nowhere on earth that has this range.”

The filmmaking team conducted 180 expeditions to capture unprecedented footage, utilizing drone technology to access previously inaccessible areas. According to Toby Gorman, president of Universal Television Alternative Studio, it is “the most expensive, unscripted project in NBC’s history.”

Groundbreaking Wildlife Footage

The series has captured numerous wildlife “firsts,” including solving the mystery of how sperm whales dive, which Gunton noted “has long been a secret. We spent two years developing the technology giving a whale’s eye view as they dive into the abyss.”

Other remarkable footage includes a mother spectacled bear making a perilous cliff descent with her cubs in the Andes, a dramatic fight between stallions after three years of filming wild horses, and a frog species that seemingly defies death through freezing each night.

Conservation Initiative

NBC has partnered with the National Wildlife Federation, LG Electronics USA, AllTrails, and Parks Project for a “Come Together for Nature” initiative that encourages viewers to connect with the natural world. The National Wildlife Federation will provide educational resources for each episode, including animal facts, quizzes, conservation actions, and lesson plans for educators.

Churchill Wild’s appearance in The Frozen North episode highlights the importance of Canada’s northern wilderness areas and reinforces the series’ mission to showcase the remarkable diversity of wildlife across the Americas.

“Your contributions to The Frozen North episode made all the difference,” wrote Anna McGill, a producer at the Natural History Unit of BBC Studios Ltd. in a recent email to Churchill Wild. “We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Thank you, Anna! And thank you to NBC, BBC, and everyone on the incredible team that created and produced The Americas.

We look forward to watching all the episodes!
