The Great Ice Bear Adventure this fall at Dymond Lake Ecolodge got off to a quick and exciting start. Within 24 hours of our arrival we spotted a mother polar bear and two cubs on the beach and after a quick hike we were able to get the new staff and guests their first encounter with polar bears.
Over the next few days a large adult male came by the lodge and decided to spend the day sleeping just outside the fence and that was how the season continued. As each group arrived we were either greeted by a polar bear along the fence at breakfast time, or within a few hours of hiking, having unforgettable encounters with bears on the beach.
As the temperature got colder and the ice grew thicker on Dymond Lake, the bear activity increased as well, with a few memorable approaches on the lake itself. As the days got shorter into early November the snowy owls started to appear on the days when the wind was favourable. One even flew into the lodge at lunch and perched on top of the Lakeshore cabin just long enough for everyone to get that perfect shot.
We were also surprised by some fresh moose tracks one morning but they led us to a thick willow patch which we unfortunately couldn’t safely follow in polar bear country. It was a great season at Dymond Lake, with lots of warm fires, great meals, plenty of polar bears, and most importantly…
Awesome guests from all over the world!
