Polar Bear Encounter

Seal River Heritage Lodge

Get a front row seat to the world of wild polar bears at Seal River Heritage Lodge! Nestled right along the polar bear highway, our lodge offers guests unforgettable close encounters with these majestic animals as they wander through their Arctic home. You never know when a polar bear might stroll by, giving us a rare and breathtaking wildlife experience—a moment you can experience both in person or through our 360 Virtual Polar Bear Tours.

When a bear approaches the lodge, it’s time to switch into stealth mode—guests must stay quiet and move slowly to respect the bear’s space. Our expert guides are always on duty outside with you, ensuring both safety and a smooth encounter. To keep things safe for everyone, we don’t allow camera lenses through the fence when a bear is nearby.

If you’re looking for an intimate and authentic polar bear experience, this is the place to be. Just you, the Arctic, and these incredible polar bears, right at the heart of their migration route.

Beluga Whale Excursion

Ready for a wild Churchill Wild Arctic adventure? Hop into a Zodiac and journey with us to the mouth of the Seal River, where some of the most curious creatures in the Arctic—beluga whales—are waiting to meet you! These friendly white whales love to come right up to the boat, creating unforgettable beluga whale watching moments that are sure to make you smile.

And here’s the best part: with our hydrophones, you won’t just see the belugas—you’ll hear them too. Their songs fill the water with a symphony you’ll never forget, adding a magical layer to the experience. If singing with belugas and soaking up the beauty of Hudson Bay wildlife sounds like your kind of adventure, check out our ‘Birds, Bears & Belugas‘ safari. And for a taste of our wilderness encounters, explore our 360 Virtual Polar Bear Tours for a front row experience.

Rare Caribou Encounter

A caribou sighting is a rare and special moment at Seal River Heritage Lodge. These elusive creatures don’t cross our path every day, but when they do, it’s pure magic. And we’ve found a fun way to increase our chances for an unforgettable wildlife encounter—introducing the Caribou Dance!

When we spot caribou nearby, guests join in the dance, raising their arms and swaying back and forth. It’s lighthearted and, believe it or not, it often works! The caribou become curious and may approach closer, giving us a truly memorable wildlife experience.

From polar bears to caribou, you never know what Churchill Wild Arctic adventures will reveal next. Whether you’re joining us in person or exploring through our 360 Virtual Polar Bear Tours, every encounter is a gift.

Ground-Level Polar Bear Encounter

Captured at Seal River Heritage Lodge, this encounter showcases how every Churchill Wild polar bear experience is unique. Some days, the polar bears pass by from a few hundred meters away, while other times, like in this special moment, a curious bear decides to come closer. While we never approach closer than 100 meters, sometimes the bears close that distance themselves.

For 10 unforgettable minutes, this polar bear lay in front of our group, watching us closely and catching our scent before calmly moving on.

Safety is always at the core of what we do. Whether you’re with us on the ground or experiencing our 360 Virtual Polar Bear Tours, learn more about how we ensure respectful and secure interactions with polar bears here.

Tundra Camp

Nestled on the shores of Schmok Lake, just a few kilometres from the Manitoba-Nunavut border, sits our Tundra Camp. This camp is set up for just a few weeks each September to allow guests an immersion into the Canadian Barren Lands.

A double, electrified and alarmed fence encloses the compound that contains seven cozy Arctic Oven expedition tents. Each is equipped with a heater and can comfortably accommodate up to two guests. Within the compound is a heated bathhouse containing a hot water shower, sink and toilet. Meals will be served in a larger expedition tent, or on the beach if the weather cooperates!

Enjoy an evening aperitif around the fire, perhaps watching the northern lights dance across the sky, before settling into your tent. You’ll sleep soundly, breathing in pure tundra air, ensconced in nature’s stillness.

If you’re an adventure seeker and someone that loves wildlife, hiking and the outdoors, you’ll have to check it our “Arctic Safari“.

Schmok Lake Hike

Join us on an unforgettable Arctic journey to Schmok Lake, a hidden gem in the remote Barren Lands near the Nunavut border. As part of Churchill Wild’s exclusive Arctic Safari, you’ll spend two nights at Caribou Tundra Camp, a cozy heated tent camp nestled in the autumn-kissed hills. Hike through untouched wilderness where fewer people have walked than on Mount Everest, and follow the ancient trails of the Pallermiut Inuit in search of the elusive Qamanirjuaq caribou herd.

Your adventure will be filled with exciting activities: pick wild blueberries, try your hand at trout fishing, or even take a daring polar plunge in the crystal-clear waters of Schmok Lake. In the evenings, gather by a crackling fire for sundowners under the Arctic sky, with the chance to witness a stunning display of the northern lights.

Photographers of all levels will enjoy the guidance of National Geographic photographer Jad Davenport, who will share his expertise in capturing Arctic landscapes and wildlife—even with your smartphone! Explore the breathtaking scenery of rolling ridges, dwarf forests, and glistening lakes on foot, all while soaking in the rare opportunity to connect with nature in one of the world’s last great wildernesses.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience is limited to just a few guests each year, making it an exclusive chance to unplug, rejuvenate, and reconnect with the wild.
